Trip Summary

One of the most striking nominees for the New7Wonders of Nature campaign, Belogradchik Rocks are a group of bizarre sandstone and limestone formations, reaching up to 150m in height. They form a strip, which is 30 km long and up to 4 km wide, and are located north of the western slopes of Stara Planina (Balkan Range), near the town of Belogradchik, to the north of Sofia.. These rock formations, which vary in colour from red through yellow to grey, are a product of erosion, and every major rock is named after something it resembles.

This tour focuses on Belogradchik and we spend 3 days in this area. Before reaching Belogradchik we visit Tchiprovtsi – a lovely mountain town at the foot of the great Balkan Range. Here we explore its unique carpet weaving traditions and go on a walk above town to appreciate nature – and there is a waterfall and medieval monastery too! More walks are planned at the Belogradchik Rocks.

Once there we also visit the stunning Magura Cave with its well-preserved pre-historic paintings. Towards the end of the tour we spend 2 days in Nature Park Vrachanski Balkan and do some more walking. We overnight in family-run Guest houses and enjoy the hospitality of the local people. There’s also time for a city walking tour of the capital, Sofia to see all major cultural highlights.
