"Many of Bulgaria's villages preserve the kind of stone or timber-built farmhouses which have largely died out elsewhere in the Balkans. A number have been spruced up or rebuilt with tourism in mind - Kovachevitsa, Shiroka Laka, Bozhentsi and Zheravna are four of the most evocative."

Rough Guide `08

Light gardens overflowing with fresh fruits, vegetables, and trellises full of grapes have been part of Bulgarian rural life for centuries. Even most city-dwelling Bulgarians have small village homes where they grow vegetables and fruits, prepare compote, home-made wine, Rakia (Bulgarian grape or plum brandy).

Horse or mule-drawn carts are used to transport produce and people.

Village visits can be arranged and guests can stay with local families in cosy traditional atmosphere. There is ample opportunity to learn to make yoghurt, preserves or wine, to pick local herbs to make tea, or to study woodcarving or weaving.
