Christianity first appeared in Bulgaria during the 4th century but did not become the official religion until 865.
Being one of the first Christian nations, Bulgaria has a very proud heritage. This is reflected in a number of atmospheric old monasteries and churches, many of which are richly decorated inside with valuable icons, wood carved iconostases and altars, and mural paintings. The monasteries and churches of Bulgaria are still waiting to be discovered by pilgrims and are real gems. Some are declined and have preserved the spirit of their time, some are newly renovated, but all have exquisite pieces of art and are lovingly looked after by people around.
Currently, Bulgaria has an interesting mix of religions that coexist and help make the country the colorful land that it is. The major religion in Bulgaria is Eastern Orthodoxy, and there are numerous religious minorities. The head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church is Patriarch Maxim.
There are more than 160 monasteries dotted around Bulgaria. The most important monasteries are at Rila, Bachkovo, Troyan, and Dryanovo.
Odysseia-In has developed a number of trips for pilgrims called Monastery Routes.
